The editor of the longest running e mail newsletter in the world  is retiring after 25 years.

The Irish Emigrant has been run from Galway since 1987 keeping thousands of Irish informed all over the world on events in Ireland. When it started in 1987  it was the first of its kind in the world.

Now however, Liam Ferrie, at 67, has decided to retire and the future of the newsletter is up for grabs.

It was established first when Ferris sent it out as a new fangled e mail to 15 Irish expatriates, Now it has 23,000 subscribers.

“I’m not really sure what will happen to the website now,” Ferrie told TheJournal.ie.

It may be handed over to a university as a project for journalism students.

“That particular idea interests me,” says Ferrie.

However, he may also sell it.

” I am open to all suggestions as I haven’t really thought about it too much,” he adds. “We’ve been merrily going along our way but when I realized February marks the 25th anniversary of the site, I decided that would be a good time to step aside.”

On Thursday this week received an honorary degree from NUI Galway for his contribution to Irish society.

“It was completely out of the blue but I was delighted with it,” he concluded.
