The trial for Liam Adams, brother of the head of Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams, has begun in Belfast this week. Liam Adams is facing charges of sexual abuse from his daughter Aine.

The Irish Star reports that Liam Adams is accused of sexually abusing his daughter Aine more than 25 years ago between 1977 and 1983. During that time period, Aine was between four and ten years old.

The court heard that in 1987, Aine was accompanied by her mother Sara and uncle Gerry to confront Liam about the accusations, but Liam denied them.

The jury heard that Aine, now 40 years old, first made a complaint to police in 1987, but she said she did not want matter to proceed further. It wasn’t until 2006 that she made the complaint again.

Aine Adams is expected to give evidence during the trial. A prosecution lawyer told the members of the jury that having heard the evidence, they will be firmly convinced of the guilt of Liam Adams.

The trial is taking place at Belfast Crown Court and is expected to last up to three weeks.
