Ireland and Britain 'need each other more than ever' the British deputy prime minister Nick Clegg told the press in Dublin today, referring to the economic partnership he hopes will see out the ongoing global financial crisis.

Clegg, who is the Liberal Democrat party leader, told government representatives that both countries could work together to 'lead' a European recovery.

Clegg arrived in Dublin a day after Irish prime minister Enda Kenny and the British prime minister David Cameron met in Downing Street.

According to a report in the Irish Examiner Kenny and Cameron agreed to work together on putting a 'growth test' at the heart of all future EU policy. If agreed by other member states, the test would ensure that new EU directives would not harm economic growth or job creation.
