AS the fall colors adorn the trees in the Catskill Mountains there are two more weekends coming up in East Durham that will provide lots of entertainment for you in between your leaf-peeping.
One of the last of the Irish resorts, Gavin’s Irish Country Inn, is going out blazing this autumn with two mega events coming up.
This Saturday, October 17, from noon to whenever, is the second annual Guinness Irish Festival at Gavin’s hostelry, 118 Golden Hill Road just off Route 145.
There is a mighty entertainment lineup of popular acts that play there regularly, including the Andy Cooney Band, Celtic Cross, Kitty Kelly Band, Padraig Allen and the Whole Shabang, Screaming Orphans and Dermot Henry. Jimmy Walsh will serve as master of ceremonies.
Call 518-634-2582 or visit www.gavins.com for more information.
The following weekend from Friday to Monday (October 23-26) is the convening of the East Coast Pipers Tionol occupying the campus grounds of Gavin’s.
Indicative of the intense interest in the uilleann pipes in North America, this annual gathering of piping stalwarts and serious tradheads has found East Durham’s growing reputation as a center for traditional music thanks to the Catskills Irish Arts Week and the Banjo Burke weekend a good fit for its own sensational programming where the quality of the music is top-notch.
There are six outstanding piping teachers this year in Brian McNamara (Leitrim) and Maire Ni Ghrada (Cork) traveling over from Ireland to join Patrick Hutchinson (Rhode Island), Bill Ochs (New York), Sean Ryan (Chicago) and Bruce Childress (Tennessee), offering classes with individual focus who will also perform in concert at the gala Saturday night concert which is open to the general public.
In addition, there are fiddle classes of a high level taught by Kathleen Collins (New York and Galway) and Cleek Schrey from Virginia, in keeping with a quality staff and agenda for the weekend.
The workshops are for the serious students of the pipes and fiddle, but the traditional music played in concert and sessions is too good to pass up if you are anywhere in the area. The website www.eastcoastpipers.com can provide more details.
