After much anticipation and eagerness "Twilight: Eclipse" opened up in movie theaters on Thursday, July 1.

Hundreds of thousands of fans throughout the U.S. stayed up late to see the movie and as a result set a new record for takings from a midnight screening.

The third movie in the saga made over $30 million on Wednesday night alone as it hit cinemas.

"New Moon"- the last instalment- took $25 million overnight when it opened.

July 4 weekend is always a big one so its no surprise that "Twilight" began the race strong.

Reaction to the movie has been overall positive.

"It's way better than "New Moon." I mean I've read the books but seeing it on screen is so much better. It brings it to life," said Daryl Massis.

A 17-year-old fan from Boston wrote on her Twitter: "It rocked, it rocked it rocked. I'm so in love with Edward Cullen and he can bite me anytime."

Valerie Balfe, a fan from New York, said "There was a lot more action this time around and a few surprises. I was excited to see it and it totally exceeded my expectations.

Earlier this week "Twilight" producer Wyck Godfrey seemingly confirmed K Stew and R Pattz rumoured relationship, saying:

“The thing I do think about is, 'Oh my God, I hope they stay together'. Because it could be awkward on set in the next movie if they have a huge falling out.”
