Newlywed Irish actor Chris O'Dowd has been promoting his new film The Sapphires at the Toronto International Film Festival this week.

According to City TV, the Australian musical comedy debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival to applause and major buzz this week.

Asked what attracted him to a film about an Aboriginal girl singing group, O'Dowd was candid:

'After Bridesmaids came out out, I was offered a lot of bad romantic comedies, and I was very conscious that I needed to do a lot of different projects so I wouldn’t get pigeon-holed.

‘And I had never done an Aboriginal musical before. Plus, I do love that era of music during the 1960s and 1970s. I honestly thought it was going to be this little indie Australian movie that maybe makes it to the UK so I’ve been surprised and delighted by its success.'
