Cillian Murphy is set to return for "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," a follow-up to "28 Years Later," this year's sequel to the 2002 surprise hit "28 Days Later."
"28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" is the second in the follow-up trilogy to "28 Days Later," which starred Co Cork native Murphy as Jim, a courier who awakens from a coma a month after the so-called 'Rage Virus' was unleashed on London.
Murphy will reprise his role as Jim when he makes a "brief" appearance in next year's "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," Danny Boyle told Variety back in June.
"I don’t think that’s giving too much away," Boyle, who directed this year's "28 Years Later," said at the time.
Boyle added that the plan is that Murphy "will be an enormous character in the third film."
The Irish Oscar winner is an executive producer on "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple."
An official synopsis of the upcoming film says: "Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in '28 Years Later' - but turning that world on its head - Nia DaCosta directs '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.'
"In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape.
"In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying."
Nia DaCosta directs "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," which was written by Alex Garland. Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, Bernard Bellew, Danny Boyle, and Alex Garland produce, with Murphy on board as executive producer.
The first trailer for "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" dropped on Wednesday, September 3. It's due to hit theaters on January 16.
