News that Simon Cowell is developing a movie project around Susan Boyle should come as no surprise. The question is who will play Susan -- and Simon.
A source recently told the British Star newspaper: “Simon can see the business potential in Susan. He’s not only seeing album deals in the U.K. and the States but movie and merchandising.”
“It would follow her dream of getting on the show and then, of course, she would have to win.
“But he would want the movie to be based around the 'Britain’s Got Talent' brand rather than Susan’s life.”
It is a rag to riches story, with Susan as the pauper who becomes a princess. It has got all the Hollywood big hit qualities of a tough beginning, overcoming adversity and final triumph.
Plus, it will have lots of wonderful songs and drama as Susan battles her way to stardom.
My choice for Susan would be Andie McDowell - remember her? She was wonderful in "Groundhog Day" opposite Bill Murray and she has spent a lot of time in Britain, so she could master the accent.
Her Wikipedia entry notes that she is "of mainly Scottish descent," which makes her a perfect choice for Susan.
Okay, she's more of a L'Oreal/Cover Girl model these days and all that, but she can surely do a great Susan Boyle given her extensive acting experience.
The part of Simon needs a caddish British or Irish actor, and who better than Pierce Brosnan? He has the perfect mix of urbane charm and cynicism that would make the Simon character come alive.
Other suggestions are Ralph Fiennes, he's certainly got that caddish look, and Daniel Craig --but 007 would hardly be available .
As Amanda Holden, the bubbly blonde "Britain's Got Talent" judge, Reese Witherspoon would be perfect. She's got that combination of vivaciousness and vacuous charm that Holden has.
Ricky Gervais would be the perfect Piers Morgan. (Did you know by the way that Morgan's real name is Piers O'Meara -- Morgan was his stepfather's name?) Gervais has that wonderful ironic humor and plain spoken side which would be perfect for the role.
Plus, in of course a cast of thousands, how about the real Michael Flatley in the role of Stavros Flatley senior? Dakota Fanning as the young Holly Steele, the list goes on...
Oh almost forgot -- a key casting piece would be Pebbles, the cat that Susan is devoted to. No doubt a nationwide search would begin to find the perfect feline.
Lights, camera, action!
