Paddy Barnes has guaranteed another Olympic medal for Ireland – and made boxing history.

The Belfast star became the first Irish boxer to win medals at two Olympic Games when he defeated India’s Devendro Singh Laishram 23-18 in the light flyweight quarter-final.

With the Irish again dominating the noise levels at the ExCeL Arena, Barnes produced a brave performance to win through.

Barnes said: ‘I’m over the moon, Words cannot describe how I’m feeling. I knew he’d come forward with all guns blazing, but I felt stronger than him.

“I trained hard and I know how good I am. I’m confident in myself. I’m going for the gold.”

Barnes will get a shot at revenge in the semi-final when he meets Zou Shiming of China who beat him at the Beijing games.
