A young Irish woman died on Friday from human swine flu at Tallaght Hospital in Dublin.

The woman, who is from the west of Ireland, is said to have had an underlying medical condition, which attributed to her death.

She is the first person in Ireland to die from the H1N1 virus since it first emerged in the country in May.

The woman’s family has requested privacy, and Tallaght Hospital said in a statement that to protect confidentiality, they will not release personal details about the case.

The hospital also made clear that all national protocols were followed while caring for the patient.

It also stated that the woman was kept in an individual room in the hospital for the entirety of her stay, and Tallagh Hospital Influenza Pandemic Flu Committee has put in place “all necessary measures to ensure both the safety of other patients and staff within the Hospital.”
