A GROUP campaigning for victims of Republican violence will travel to the U.S. this week to lobby for support in a billion dollar lawsuit against Libyan Colonel Moammar Gadaffi. The south Armagh based Families Acting for Innocent Relatives (FAIR) victims group are due to meet a number of senators and governors during their 10-day visit to the U.S.Last month the group began a law suit in the U.S. against Gadaffi and the Libyan government for its decision to supply semtex explosives to the IRA in the 1980s.FAIR spokesman Willie Frazer claims that if the group's law suit is successful it could potentially lead to more than 3,500 victims of IRA bombings sharing in a compensation package worth billions of dollars. The case is due to open later this summer. It is claimed that diplomatic moves to force Libya to make a settlement with FAIR lawyers is already under way."A case like this does not simply happen, it is a result of years of work, and is a testimony for the central role FAIR plays in the victims' sector in Northern Ireland," Frazer said."The case is the first and probably only of its kind for victims here and will expose the terrorists and those who sponsored them."It will give a platform for victims in the U.S. and ensure justice and compensation for those who suffered."The 10-day trip will culminate with a meeting with State Department and White House staff.
