IRISH American teenager Aisling Travers was so inspired by her brave seven-year-old cousin's battle for life that she used her vacation in Ireland to give a boost to other kids of courage. The 15-year-old organized a special talent show in cousin Shaun Meehan's home town, Donegal, so a kids' hospital ward where he spent so much time could have some badly-needed new toys. And last Monday, after a sell-out show, Aisling and Shaun headed for Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, with a whopping $21,300 check for goodies for its St. Raphael Children's Ward.Philadelphia native Aisling, who lives with parents Seamus and Marie Travers and her four younger siblings in Malvern, Pennsylvania, has spent every second summer with relatives in Donegal and Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim.Since her last visit in 2006 little Shaun has been a frequent visitor to Beaumont in his struggle with a brain tumor."Every year I get involved in some project for charity. My little cousin has battled so bravely that it was the most natural thing in the world to do something for him while in Donegal this summer," Aisling said. She discovered that while other children's wards are well-stocked with toys, they are in short supply at Beaumont.Shaun's mother Kate explained, "The children's ward in Beaumont is very small because kids there are mainly in for treatment for brain-related illnesses so there are fewer of them. Consequently, when it comes to the provision of playthings they don't fare as well as kids in other hospitals. Almost every toy there is broken. Now they'll be able to get a Play Station and some hand-held toys for children confined to their beds."Within days of her arrival in Ireland in June Aisling set about organizing the talent show. Dozens of local musicians, singers and dancers rallied to the cause. Former Eurovision star Mickey Joe Harte was lined up as a special guest."I'm delighted to be involved. It's a long day for kids in hospital and I think it's a lovely touch to try and raise toys for them. Anything that will help them get through the day and take their minds off what they're going through has to be worthwhile," Harte said.He quipped, "I wish there were a few more promoters like Aisling in show business in this country."Harte Joe had serious competition at the show. It finished with Shaun and his nine-year-old cousin Gerard Byrne getting a standing ovation when they got on stage to sing the Westlife hit "You Raise Me Up."Sadly for little Shaun, while the kids in Beaumont will benefit from the huge check he and Aisling handed over, he then crossed Dublin to be re-admitted to a different hospital. He has already undergone 86 weeks of chemotherapy, but a new complication meant he had to enter St. Luke's Hospital where he will spend the next six weeks undergoing radiotherapy.
