IRELAND mourned over the tragic deaths of inseparable identical twins Richard and Michael Walsh in a fire caused by candles they were forced to use for lighting when the electricity in their apartment was cut off because the bill was not paid by a previous tenant. The tragedy happened in Waterford city just four weeks after the 33-year-olds moved into the apartment. When the power was unexpectedly cut off last week the brothers bought four candles, according to their parents, Jim and Mary Walsh. The brothers spread the candles around the living room and placed one on top of the television set.Firefighters were alerted to a blaze when the alarm was raised by people who feared they would be trapped elsewhere in the building. But the flames didn't spread and the blaze burned itself out before the firemen arrived. By then the twins had been overcome by smoke inhalation. Their bodies were found in the ground-floor apartment as well as that of their six-week-old puppy, Ruby.Cops said they were not treating the fire as suspicious.A friend of the dead men, 23-years-old David Power, spoke of his shock after visiting the tragic scene and finding the bodies."They were quiet people. They just enjoyed their few pints and a bet at the bookies (betting shop)," he said.Hundreds of mourners attended the funerals following prayers at Holy Cross Church in the twins' native Tramore, Co. Waterford. The twins' mother, Mary, visited them the evening before the fire to see their new dog. She left them just 12 hours before their bodies were found.
