AN Irish soldier died tragically in a freak accident at the world-famous Pamplona bull festival in northern Spain.Private Aidan Holly, 23, from Tarbert, Co. Kerry, was on vacation when he was found dead on Sunday at the bottom of a 120-foot medieval wall close to streets where stampeding bulls run at regular intervals during the second week of July every year.Pamplona city authorities said they believed Holly fell to his death from the top of the wall. Although the festival was formally opened on Sunday the first run of the bulls didn't take place until Monday.A spokesman for the National Police in Pamplona said, "The man fell more than 30 meters from the 300-year-old Redin wall in the city in what appears to be a tragic accident."He fell from a wall away from the bull-run and may have been relaxing away from the main festivities. An autopsy will be carried out to establish the cause of death and whether he had been drinking excessively or taking drugs."Unfortunately, several people have died in recent years falling from the city's fortified walls during the festivities."Last year, an American man and his Spanish girlfriend fell to their deaths from the same wall.Initially, Spanish authorities had difficulty identifying the body of the dead tourist. They knew only that he was Irish because a bank card issued by an Irish bank was found with the body.Defense Minister Willie O'Dea and the chief of staff of the Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Dermot Earley, offered their condolences to Holly's family. Holly joined the Defense Forces in July last year and had successfully completed his full course of military training. He was attached to the 4th Battalion in Collins Barracks in Cork and was abroad on official leave when the tragedy occurred.
