EFFORTS were this week continuing to repair hundreds of homes and roads across Northern Ireland after some of the worst flooding in decades.On Saturday the equivalent of the entire August rainfall fell in just one 12 hour period.The massive storm led to hundreds of houses in Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone and Derry being flooded as up to a dozen rivers burst their banks, with many roads being completely submerged.At Newcastle in Co. Down lifeboat crews had to rescue people from their flooded homes.Up to 2,000 people had in the seas side town were forced to go without water for a time. Many families were forced to spend the night in local community centers.At Ballymena in Co. Antrim a bridge was washed away by the force of the rising rivers.At Tobermore in Co. Derry an elderly brother and sister had to be rescued by tractor after their home was flooded when the River Moyola burst its banks.In Co. Tyrone, nine farmers saved local homes from flooding by using their slurry pumping equipment to control water levels in the village of Beragh.At the height of the flooding emergency services received more than 3,000 calls.In the most serious incident the main motorway through the heart of Belfast, which had just been re-opened last month after a major 200 million redevelopment, had to be closed after one of its main underpasses was flooded with more than 20 feet of water.Up to a dozen motorists had to abandon their cars as the Broadway Underpass unexpectedly flooded at the height of the downpour on Saturday afternoon.The road remained closed for three days while emergency teams pumped 20 million gallons of water from the underpass.Environment Minister Sammy Wilson announced a 2,000 compensation package for each of the hundreds of homes that had been flooded by Saturday's storm.
