ACCORDING to the Nassau County Health Department on Long Island, three Irish students became ill with the mumps between July 5 and July 24. A health advisory issued last Friday, July 25, by the Nassau County Health Department cited three students from Ireland having mumps within weeks of each other. According to the report, two of the students worked at the Atlantic Beach Club and one at the Laurence Beach Club in Atlantic Beach. The advisory urged guests who were at either club between July 5 and July 24 to be alert. Symptoms of the mumps, a viral disease, include swelling in the glands below the front of the ears, fever, headache or muscle aches. Symptoms of mumps usually occur within 16 to 18 days after exposure, although the time period may extend from 12 to 25 days. The report stated that one of the Irish students became ill on Thursday, July 24 and the second became sick on July 10th while working at the Atlantic Beach Club. The third student who worked at the Laurence Beach Club, according to the advisory, developed mump like symptoms on June 19 but was not diagnosed with mumps at that time. A spokesperson for the Laurence Beach Club told the Irish Voice on Monday that none of their employees ever had mumps. A call to the manager to the Atlantic Beach Club was not returned. At time of press, the names and conditions of the three Irish students, presumed on J-1 visas for the summer, was not known.
