A turbulent year for Mayo football took a dramatic twist on Wednesday night when the county board announced it had ‘relieved’ Kevin McStay and his management team of their duties.

The news came 10 days after Mayo’s Championship was ended by defeat to Donegal — and just weeks after McStay had stepped aside from his role due to health issues.

Speculation around one of the most high-profile roles in Gaelic games was rife within the county in the aftermath of that loss, with McStay still having a year to run on the four-year deal he agreed when taking on the manager’s job in 2022.

Andy Moran and Austin O’Malley are the early names linked to the position. Moran, a legendary figure in the county’s resurgence in the 2010s, is part of the Monaghan management team preparing for Saturday’s All-Ireland quarter-final against Donegal, while O’Malley managed Cuala to the All-Ireland club title in January.

Stephen Rochford had filled in during McStay’s absence, taking charge of the side for the group win over Tyrone and the Donegal defeat, and was part of the management team this season along with Damien Mulligan, Donie Buckley and Joe Canney. All have now departed, following last night’s dramatic developments at a county board meeting.

"At this meeting a decision was made to relieve Kevin McStay and his management team from their roles with the Mayo senior football team with immediate effect," said a statement, adding that "An update regarding the future management of the Senior Football Team will be provided in due course."
