“Late Afternoon” examining living with dementia, created by Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny could be in with a chance of winning a 2019 Academy Award.
An Irish animated short movie, “Late Afternoon” has been shortlisted for an Academy Award. The official Oscar nominations will be announced on Jan 22, ahead of the 91st awards ceremony, on Feb 24, 2019.
“Late Afternoon” was made by the Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Saloon. It was written and directed by Louise Bagnell.
The movie examines the topic of dementia as it follows Emily, an elderly woman as she drifts back through her memories and relives her past.

The animation studio, Cartoon Saloon, is best known for its feature-length movies “The Secret of Kells”, “Song of the Sea” and last years critically acclaimed “The Breadwinner”.
“Late Afternoon’s” happy news was revealed as part of the Oscar shortlists for nine categories, including best foreign film and best original song.
Ireland’s Minister for Culture Josepha Madigan congratulated Bagnell and Cartoon Saloon. She told the Irish Times “Again Irish excellence is being recognized on a global scale – shortlisting and nomination for major international awards such as the Oscars is a great honor and demonstrates the strength and talent of the Irish film and animation industries.”
