Belfast boom as Fleadh footfall shatters predictions, set to exceed 1 million

Crowds continue to flock to Belfast for the 2026 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world’s biggest celebration of Irish music and culture.

Belfast City Council announced on Friday that the latest figures from Belfast One Business Improvement District show a total recorded footfall of 900,020 in the city core from Sunday, August 2 - the first day of the Fleadh - to Thursday, August 6.

There were 176,462 visitors recorded on Sunday, 165,077 on Monday, 162,015 on Tuesday, 169,296 on Wednesday, and 227,170 on Thursday.

The footfall recorded from Sunday through Thursday has now comfortably exceeded the original 800,000 visitors predicted by hosts Belfast City Council, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, and Ards CCÉ.

And that's before the three days of competitions, regarded as the most popular portion of the Fleadh, begin.

On Friday, Martina Connolly, CEO of Belfast One, predicted that footfall would pass the one million mark by the end of the day.

Connolly commented: “The past five days have brought huge energy, talent and craic into Belfast, showing us the potential of the city to attract events with a worldwide scope, which has been wonderful to see for organisers, performers, businesses and visitors alike.”

The latest Fleadh figures come as competitors battled it out in traditional music, song, dance and language categories in the Waterfront Hall, Assembly Buildings, the MAC and Ulster University on Friday afternoon – the first of three days of competitions in what is widely considered to be the busiest period within any Fleadh.

Comhaltas is providing a free online livestream for select competitions through the weekend.

To help support crowd levels across the city centre this weekend, organizers are again reminding visitors and residents to follow traffic and travel information, leave extra time for their journey and expect services to be busy.

Over 1 million passenger journeys have already been made across the Translink network over the last five days, with a special Fleadh timetable in place this weekend to support those travelling in and out of Belfast, with significantly enhanced capacity and additional services, including late-night services and Park and Ride operations.

Three official Park and Ride sites for Fleadh are also operating at Eikon Exhibition Centre, Giant’s Park and Belfast Harbour for £10 each day. Free, regular shuttle buses are running between the sites and either Grand Central Station or Laganside Bus Centre, depending on which one you choose. Visitors are also reminded to follow the advice and directions of volunteers and event stewards, and to pick up a what’s on guide and map – available from all Fleadh venues and volunteers – to explore everything that is available, right across the city centre.
