Joe Brolly on his "Free State" podcast.

Brolly, the former GAA player and pundit, hosts the Free State podcast with Dion Fanning, where they discussed the upcoming Presidential election on Thursday’s episode, with Mr. Brolly pretending to perform a sex act while answering a hypothetical question.

While the clip was shared online with people believing he aimed them at Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys, Mr. Brolly since clarified that they were not about her — but rather about the Presidential election in general, which he compared to the Rose of Tralee.

"Just to be clear, on the podcast I was talking about Jim Gavin being unsuited to the insubstantial nature of the presidential campaign," Mr. Brolly wrote on Twitter (X).

"It was nothing to do with Heather. Transcript below. Podcast available on all platforms."

The transcript, which adds a few seconds to the clip that was initially shared, showed Joe saying: "We were talking about the Trinity Old Boys, a lot of us know Jim well… the Irish Presidential campaign, is a bit like a nasty Rose of Tralee.

"You say, 'oh, I go to Mass every sunday, and we’re very devout, and my granny’s very devout,' [and someone says] 'hold on a minute now, we just happen to have a video that you appear to have shot yourself, doing the reverse cowgirl in public upstairs in a public bar in Dublin,' and showing it to her.

"That’s what the [Presidential election has become]," Joe adds before mimicking the sex act.

Mr. Brolly has since issued an apology for the gestures he made while making the comments, writing: "During the podcast I made a childish, crude and inappropriate gesture to Dion.

"The gesture – as is clear from the audio – had nothing whatsoever to do with the presidential candidates. I was making fun of stock questions and responses that happen in a presidential campaign."

"I am very proud of the Free State and the production team," he added. "My action was in poor taste and should have never happened."
