The Oscar-winning songwriter died after coming off his motorcycle in the Strawberry Beds area of west Dublin in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Earlier that night, he had taken part in a trad session at the Wren’s Nest pub, around two kilometers from where he was later found. He left the pub after closing time at about 11.30pm.

It is understood that Gardai are now aware where Hansard spent the missing hours before he set off on the journey towards his home in Celbridge, Co Kildare.

The 56-year-old was tragically discovered on the Lower Road shortly before 4.30am.

Gardai have not issued any further public update on the circumstances of the collision and their investigation is ongoing.

Officers have appealed to anyone who was in the area to come forward, and are particularly keen to obtain any dashcam or doorbell footage that may assist them.

Hansard will lie in repose at a public wake in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, on Monday between 11am and 4pm.

His funeral takes place at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday at 1.30pm.
