The funding, totalling €7.9m for 2026, will be distributed across Shannon Airport, Ireland West Airport, Kerry Airport and Donegal Airport.

The programme marks a significant shift in policy, with eligibility expanded for the first time to include airports handling up to three million passengers annually, bringing Shannon Airport into scope.

Announcing the allocations, O’Brien said the investment reflects the Government’s focus on regional connectivity and balanced economic growth.

“I am pleased to allocate almost €8m in capital funding this year to support Shannon, Ireland West (Knock), Kerry and Donegal airports,” he said.

“This level of targeted support… is an indication of the importance Government attaches to regional airports.

“This funding will support connectivity and balanced regional development, while seeking to maximize the use of existing capacity across our regional airports.”

A total of 32 projects will be supported under this year’s funding round.

These include the replacement of fire tenders at Shannon and Kerry airports, alongside safety and security upgrades across all four locations.

The programme will also fund sustainability initiatives, including the completion of a solar photovoltaic (PV) farm at Ireland West Airport to supply renewable energy.

Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports Seán Canney said the funding will help future-proof regional infrastructure.

“Strong, well-connected regional airports are essential to economic development, tourism, and job creation,” he said.

“The Regional Airports Programme funding helps our airports to meet future demand and to further build their resilience.”

He added that the inclusion of Shannon Airport represents an important development in the programme’s evolution.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer highlighted the role regional airports play in supporting local economies and tourism.

“This significant capital funding underlines the Government’s strong commitment to our regional airports,” he said.

Fianna Fail Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy and Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien.

“They are not only vital to maintaining connectivity for the communities and businesses they serve, but act as gateways for visitors to some of the most beautiful parts of our country.”

Under the 2026 allocations, Ireland West Airport will receive €2.83m, Kerry Airport €2.77m, Shannon Airport €1.94m, and Donegal Airport €367,000.
