Many will be familiar with this lovely name from one well known legend from Irish mythology, the Children of Lir.
The famous tale tells the story of the four children of King Lir and and his wife Aoibh, Fionnuala, Aodh, Fiachra, and Conn who are turned into swans for 900 years by their new stepmother Aoife after their mother dies.
Lir is also the name of a sea god found in Irish mythology.
According to the CSO, the strong Irish moniker Lir appeared on the charts for the first time in 2020, when it was given to three babies.
After a three year disappearance, as names need to be given to three or more children in a year to rank, it fell into favor again in 2023 when it was given to four babies that year.
In 2024, that figure grew to five baby Lirs being born, ranking in at 582nd on the overall list, making it a unique and rare find.
