A fundraiser has been launched for a couple in Kerry who were seriously injured in a firepit incident in Kerry.

The incident occurred last Saturday (June 13) when a liquid accelerant was poured on a firepit at the Loreto Convent Estate in Killarney.

Six people were injured during the incident, which was not described as malicious, including a young child and his mother who were hospitalised.

Two of the victims, it has since been learned, were a young couple who married in 2024; both of them suffered injuries in the fire.

Dale Kelly and his husband, River, were injured in the incident, both men suffering burns. River is reportedly facing a long road to recovery after he suffered serious burns in the horrifying incident.

A GoFundMe has since been launched for the couple and had raised nearly €8,000 at the time of writing.

‘River sustained serious burns and is currently facing a long, difficult, and painful road to recovery,’ the GoFundMe’s description read. ‘Beyond the immense physical and emotional toll this has taken, the financial burden of specialized medical treatments, rehabilitation, and daily living expenses during this time is overwhelming.’

‘Anyone who knows River and Dale knows how incredibly generous, resilient, and kind-hearted they are. Now, it is our turn to rally around them.’

It’s understood that neighbours were socialising at a house in the Loreto Convent Garden estate in Killarney to celebrate the nice weather, when the fire got out of control at around 10 pm.

A young boy is being treated at Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin. His mother, along with three others, was also injured in the horrific incident. A separate fundraising page has been set up and had raised over €47,000 by the time of writing.

It reads: ‘In the wake of a devastating accidental fire in the Loreto area, our beloved Kristina and her young son, Tom, a student at Loreto school Killarney, are currently fighting for their lives in the intensive care unit, both suffering from severe burns.

‘As they face a long, painful, and critical road to recovery, their family is confronting an overwhelming emotional and financial burden, with medical bills mounting and specialised burn treatments required.

They cannot navigate this tragedy alone. We are urgently asking for your financial support to help cover their medical expenses, allowing their family to focus entirely on healing.

‘Every donation, no matter the size, brings a glimmer of hope and vital relief to a mother and son in their darkest hour.’
