Peter Taylor, the father of world champion Irish boxer Katie Taylor, has been injured in a shooting in his gym in Bray, Co. Wicklow.

A 50-year-old man was killed and two others injured in a shooting at a gym in Co. Wicklow early on Tuesday morning. The father of Irish Olympic champion Katie Taylor, Peter Taylor, is believed to be among those injured in the incident which took place at 6.55am in the gym he founded in Bray, a town not far south of Dublin.

Gardaí (Irish police) say a lone gunman entered the gym and fired a number of shots, one of them striking a man in the head and killing him. Taylor is said to have been shot in the arm with the bullet then bouncing into his chest. His condition is believed to be serious but not life-threatening.

Police say the attacker then fled the scene in a silver Volkswagen van with a Northern Ireland license plate.

There are believed to have been between 15 and 20 people present in the gym when the shooting took place, preparing for a fitness session that was about to start.

"They were about to start the gym session when a gunman came in carrying a firearm - we believe it was a handgun,” said Supt Patrick Ward.

A motive for the murder is not yet known and Gardaí say the man killed was using the gym like all the others present.

"We know the gunman left the scene in a silver Volkswagen Caddy. We don't know if he was accompanied by a driver or if anybody else was with him," Ward added.

"We know that he left the scene and drove to Bray town center, possibly on the Seapoint Road."

Katie Taylor is among Ireland’s most accomplished athletes and one of the country’s most successful boxers. She was trained by her father Peter from a young age and he stood in her corner as she went onto win five world championship gold medals and her gold medal in the London 2012 Olympics.
