The man was one of 22 people on a deportation flight to Costa Rica on Friday, as part of a new arrangement between the Central American country and the US.
The man’s name and age were not released by authorities. Costa Rica’s General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners described the Irishman as "elderly".
He will be offered assistance to return to Ireland, or can apply to stay in Costa Rica.
The Department of Foreign Affairs told Extra.ie yesterday it is "aware of reports and stands ready to provide consular assistance".

He said: "As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on individual cases."
Earlier this month, Costa Rica’s government agreed to take in 25 US deportees a week, in an effort to build a closer alliance with the Trump regime.
Illegal immigration into the US has been the subject of a massive policy response since the re-election of Donald Trump as US President, with ICE leading the controversial efforts that have seen two protesters shot.
