Fresh Stew LIVE will turn East 27th Street into a scene straight out of a Victorian thriller when the Irish Stew crew welcomes Golway, actor Mick Mellamphy, and uilleann piper Chris Byrne on Monday, June 1. The special live recording promises Fenian drama, lively conversation, and plenty of craic in one of Manhattan’s most fitting Irish settings.
How did Sherlock Holmes end up in a New York Irish pub? Just ask Terry Golway.
That's just what the Irish Stew Crew intends to do when they lure the noted historian, journalist, and raconteur to the stage for Fresh Stew LIVE, a live audience podcast recording event.
After all, Terry wrote "Terror From America: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure", his new thriller that conjures a scenario in which the great detective comes to New York to break up the Fenian gangs responsible for a bombing campaign in 1880s London.
The game is afoot on Mon. June 1, at 7:00 PM in the appropriately self-described Fenian pub Ernie O’Malley’s on East 27th St.
"Ernie O'Malley's, a famous revolutionary name, a Fenian pub par excellence,” cohost Martin Nutty says.
“I cannot imagine a better place to be talking about some of the historical figures that populate Terry's book," Martin says.
Fresh Stew! The Irish Stew Podcast goes live at Ernie O'Malley's in New York.
The evening opens with a fiddler setting the mood, part Holmesian, part Irish session, before Terry joins the podcasters to talk about his writing career, his deep roots in Irish American history, and what drew him into the world of Sherlock Holmes. Actor Mick Mellamphy joins the fray, giving voice to the novel's characters and bringing their dangerous world vividly to life.
Following the Q&A, Terry will sign books (cash or check only for book purchases), then the craic continues with a live music session led by legendary uilleann piper Chris Byrne of Black 47 fame.
Fresh Stew LIVE is the Irish Stew podcast’s third live audience recording event, having done two episodes in one evening last year as part of the Origin Theatre Festival, while this winter the podcasters hosted an onstage post-screening Q&A with the director and producer of the night’s feature film at the Solas Nua Capital Irish Film Festival.
“The live events are an ideal way to connect with the audience face-to-face and to take our ‘Global Irish Nation Conversation’ in new directions,” John says.
“Martin and I have a memorable time doing them, and folks who come seem to enjoy these sessions too. This time we’re adding music, actor Mick Mellamphy, and the first drink is on us!”
The duo delves into the dynamics of the live event, their goals for Fresh Stew LIVE, and their coming collaboration with Terry Golway in this brief preview episode:
