In order to mark the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s legendary Folsom Prison concert, an Irish tribute band will be performing at the Spike Island prison in County Cork.

The original gig Cash played was to inmates at the well-known, yet infamous prison, which came out as a subsequent live album that ultimately defined his career as a class act in country music.

The Irish Mirror reported that the band, Strictly Cash, is due to perform at the former prison turned popular local tourist site to follow in the steps of the famous country singer. They’re going to be performing on July 1, the day of the show back in 1968.

The band has played at a prison before, most notably Mountjoy Prison for the concert’s 40th anniversary back in 2008. They’ve been playing Cash’s hit songs for years together.

According to the event’s official page online, “[people should] Expect a fitting tribute to the Man in Black and that legendary concert at California’s notorious Folsom Prison, in Ireland’s most famous prison island. Tickets are said to cost $23 (€20), which will include the ferry over to the prison and a full tour through the facility’s cells.

While it’s not the real thing, it’s a big deal considering the Spike Island prison at Fort Mitchell has been described as “Cork’s own Alcatraz”.
