Did you know this easy dishwasher trick? iStock

Are you sure you know how your dishwasher works? This Irish dad has some advice for you.

It’s always a pain having a dishwasher when you have that one awkward piece that just won’t fit in or you have too many objects that are too high and you just can’t get away with not filling up the sink with soap and suds and handwashing a few things after dinner. For one Irish Dad, this was a daily obstacle, as he believed that the higher tray in his dishwasher was just too low to allow him to throw in his dinner plates.

Michael McLoughlin, from Limerick, moved into his current house ten years ago and over the past decade has never been able to get away with not having to wash up his dishes after a big meal. You can imagine his shock a whole ten years on (I repeat, ten years) when he finally discovers that yes, the trays in your dishwasher are moveable and you can move the top tray higher to allow you to put in larger plates.

“I moved into this house in 2008. It always annoyed me that the lower level of the dishwasher wasn’t tall enough to fit my biggest dinner plates,” McLoughlin writes on Twitter.

“Been handwashing them all this time. This week I discovered you can raise the upper shelf and all my plates fit fine. TEN FUCKING YEARS.”

Mind blown!

The internet went mad for McLoughlin’s tweet with some applauding his discovery and thanking him for saving them a few more years of their own struggles while others poked fun at the time it took him to figure it out.

“Can now spend more quality time with my family #lifechanging,” said one user.

“It took me 15 years to realize that I could lift the top of the dishwasher cutlery box to make room for wider, bigger spoons and knives! (And I have two degrees and an MA!)” added another.

Well, we’re glad you got there eventually, Michael.

Never knew you could twist the metal ring opener on a can around to hold your straw? Never knew that you're supposed to tap the neck when you can’t get ketchup out of a glass bottle? What was the obvious life hack you were amazed to discover too little too late?
