Daniel Day-Lewis in "Anemone."Focus Features
After confirming he was returning to acting after retiring from the craft, the first trailer for Daniel Day-Lewis’s new film "Anemone" has just been released.
The Wicklow-based actor announced his retirement (well, his second retirement after a brief one between 1997-2000) back in 2017, and when images emerged of him on set in the UK, it seemed he’d found a project to tempt him back to the screen.
That project was "Anemone," which marks his son Ronan’s directorial debut, and the pair wrote the script together, making it a passion project for both men.
The official synopsis for the film doesn’t give away much detail, simply stating: "'Anemone' explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons."
The trailer has teased this main theme, with Sean Bean playing Daniel’s brother. Bean has gone into the woods to look for his estranged brother, who went there to live the hermit life many years ago.
The pair is "bonded by a mysterious, complicated past," which allows them to "share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship" that was "forever altered by shattering events decades earlier."
Now, with the release of the trailer, we know when we’ll be able to see the film on the big screen, but its premiere will be at The New York Film Festival, which runs from September 26 to October 13.
"Anemone" also stars Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Bean, and is executive produced by Daniel and Brad Pitt.
