Bob Rotella, the golf psychologist known for his work with Masters winner Rory McIlroy, has revealed he is open to joining forces with the Irish rugby team ahead of their next World Cup campaign.
It comes after McIlroy, 35, made history last weekend at the iconic Augusta National by becoming just the sixth man to achieve a career grand slam, joining legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, and Tiger Woods in the Green jacket club.
The Holywood man has also become the first Irishman to win the Masters after what can only be described as a "rollercoaster" journey over the previous 11 years.
From his infamous collapse at the 2011 Masters as a 21-year-old to the near miss at the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 last year, Rory McIlroy’s journey to the coveted green jacket has been littered with heartbreak.
As many wondered if he would ever shake his mental block, Dr. Bob Rotella entered the picture, standing by Rory as he conquered the demons that haunted him on golf’s biggest stages, becoming one of the legend’s key fighting figures in finally getting over the line.
As Dr. Rotella takes a step back to enjoy McIlroy’s ultimate win, the expert has now revealed that there is another group of Irish sporting heroes that he would be open to getting in touch with.
Speaking to the Sunday Independent, the 75-year-old revealed that he was up for getting in touch with the Irish rugby team ahead of their next World Cup tournament.
He added that he would be open to speaking to them in person or on Zoom, divulging that he would be "glad" to talk to them after working with many other team sports.
"It’s a lot of the same," he said. "You better believe in your team more than you believe in any other team. If you don’t think you’re going to win, well… then you must believe in the other team… and that doesn’t make any sense."
Following a number of big-name retirements this year, the World Cup is sure to hang over the Irish squad, and following Rory’s monumental golfing victory, Dr. Rotella may be exactly what they need.
Ireland undoubtedly has what it takes to walk away as winners of the 2027 World Cup, and with that particular tournament still some time away, they have plenty of time to ensure they do just that!
