A name fit for an Irish princess! iStock
For parents on the hunt for a beautiful Irish name that is unique and has never appeared on the top 10, 100, or even 200 most popular charts in Ireland, we might have found the perfect option for you!
While scouring the CSO’s list of baby names from last year, a pretty homegrown moniker caught our eye – Saorla.
Ideal for Dums and Dads who don’t want to choose a name that will be too commonly heard on the school playground, Saorla is pronounced "seer-lah" and means "noble princess".
Making it the perfect fit for your little princess, Saorla can also be spelled Saorlaith, with both options being equally as cute and as rare as the other.
For parents looking for a name that is unique, Irish and oh-so-adorable, Saorla and Saorlaith fit the bill wonderfully.
Last year, Saorla was given to 13 baby girls and ranked in 307 on the charts while Saorlaith was given to 16, in the 259th spot.
According to the CSO, Saorla peaked in usage back in 2015 and 2022, with 18 Saorlas born, with Saorlaith peaking in 2024 and 2022.
The name Saorla first appeared in 1995 when three baby Saorlas were born. As records require a name being used more than three times to appear on charts, it didn’t surface again until 2006.
Saorlaith first charted in 2007 and hasn’t been used more than 16 times in any given year since.
We love Saorla or Saorlaith for a little girl! What do you think of this unique Irish name?
