These festive Irish names were the most popular for babies born in December last year

The most popular names for boys and girls born in December 2024 have been revealed, and they may not surprise you.

Some names are popular all year round, like Jack, which has been the most popular name for baby boys in Ireland for years. However, others suit certain times of the year better than others. Many parents favour floral names in spring and summer, for example, and some might choose cute, cosy names for their babies born in autumn.

So it makes sense that festive names top the lists for December babies, although there are a few classics thrown in there too, according to newly released statistics from the CSO.

Fiadh was the joint favourite name for baby girls born in December 2024, with 27 babies given the moniker. Joining Fiadh at the top was Robyn, with 27 little girls given that name also.

Fiadh is a gorgeous Irish name meaning ‘deer’ or ‘wild’, so it is perfect for a winter or December baby, while Robyn also has festive associations.

Holly was the most popular name for baby girls in December for the last number of years, but in 2024 it was knocked down the list.

When it comes to boys, Rían, meaning ‘little king’ comes out on top with 44 baby boys born given the name. Rían is popular all year round, but it’s a bit extra special during the festive season.

Over 18 per cent of baby girls named Robyn in 2024 were born in December, knocking Holly, which had been the favoured name for 10 years, all the way down to number five.
