While we’ll always have a soft spot for the classic Irish names that have long held a special place in the hearts of parents across Ireland (Saoírse, Caoimhe and Roísin, we’re talking about you!), it’s always a nice surprise to come across a rare find that deserves a share of the spotlight.

If you’re on the hunt for a pretty moniker that won’t be too commonly heard on the playground, why not look further down the trending lists for inspiration?

One such name that we feel is destined for a rise to popular favour was only given to seven baby girls last year and appeared for the first time back in 2018.

If you love the name Mairead or another unique Irish pick on the rise, Réaltín, meaning "star", Réidín is a great option for your little bundle of joy!

Réidín is a beautiful homegrown choice stemming from the timeless Mairead, which possesses the lovely meaning of ‘pearl’.

Pronounced "ray-deen", Réidín ranked in at 504th place of the names chosen by parents in Ireland last year. It has been given to fewer than eight babies annually since its debut on Irish charts in 2018, when four baby Réidíns were born.

There’s also a version without fadas that has dropped out of favour, with less than three baby girls named Reidin born in 2024.

It has appeared a few times in the last decade, four times in 2011 and 2016 and three times in 2013.

What do you think of the name Réidín? Would you choose this name for your little girl?
