Irish citizen Stephen Crean, 61, was stabbed several times last Saturday as he helped prevent the attacker from reaching passengers hiding in a buffet carriage.
He also blocked him from knifing a teenage girl, which she says saved her life; 10 people were wounded in the mass stabbing.
However, despite his heroism, Ryanair refused to refund Mr. Crean and told him that he should have taken out travel insurance to avoid losing money.
Mr Crean had been due to fly out to Austria on Wednesday to see Nottingham Forest play Sturm Graz in the Europa League the next day, but was unable to travel because of the injuries he suffered.
However, the budget airline said: "All Ryanair air fares are non-refundable, which is why we strongly recommend passengers take out travel insurance in order to protect themselves."
This week, Mr. Crean told RTÉ that his parents are both from Ireland, he visits frequently, holds an Irish passport, and supports the Republic of Ireland soccer team.
"I’ll always class myself as Irish. That will never go away till the day I die," he said.
