Every year, the US Ambassador to Ireland hosts a 4th of July celebration at their address in Phoenix Park, Dublin, but one immigration lawyer working in the U.S. believes there should be no such party amid children being held in cages.

The Irish Examiner reported that Irish attorney Fiona McEntee believes people should not be drinking wine and enjoying themselves while children are being held in detention centers. This move on her part has been taken because of the Trump administration’s choice to enforce the separation of parents from their children at the border and the subsequent outcry that has come about.

“We’re here today to ask the Irish politicians not to participate in any type of celebration of July 4 here in our backyard at the US embassy,” McEntee stated.

“They have a duty to use the voice that they have in opposing this policy.”

This call for the party to not take place has happened amid a recent storm of condemnation of the controversial US immigration policy from the Irish Government, with virtually all parties represented at the Dail (Irish parliament) criticizing the practice.

Fianna Fáil leader Micháel Martin expressed that the policy was reprehensible and advocated for all parties to come together and agree to collectively condemn the policy.

“I think it is very important to give a very clear message to the US government that it is absolutely unacceptable and it should be communicated government-to-government and parliament-to-parliament,” Martin stated.
