Australian actor Russell Crowe, a frequent visitor to Ireland, has called for a yes vote in today’s abortion referendum.

Gladiator star Russell Crowe retweeted a video posted by Saoirse Long to his 2.76m followers.

Saoirse told her harrowing her story of traveling to the UK for an abortion during a debate and repeats it on Twitter:

The actor shared the video with the caption, "I have two beautiful sons . I wasn’t lucky enough to have a daughter. If I had, I’d wish her to have courage like yours. Nobody’s daughter should ever be told she doesn’t have authority over her own body. This video is the beginning and the end of the debate. #yes".

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald said it was a momentous vote."This is a...decision we're being asked to make for all of Irish society but particularly for Irish women,"  McDonald said.
