A former truck driver had his last wish fulfilled when his coffin was brought to the crematorium on the back of a Scania truck.

A former truck driver, John Dineen, had his final wish granted by his former employer, that he go to God on the back of a lorry. Dineen passed away, due to cancer, aged 74, just four months after his wife, Nora.

On Nov 28, Dineen's coffin was carefully strapped on to the back of a show truck, a Scania Topline 620.  The staff of Martin Ryan & Sons Haulage and Garryspillane GAA gave the well-known truck driver a guard of honor.

Dineen loved his work and only retired in November 2018 to care of his sick wife. He drove trucks all of his life. His daughter-in-law Teresa told the Irish Examiner "He had his own built-in sat-nav — he didn’t need Google maps. John was loved by everyone, he was very popular."

She added, “He had no intention whatsoever of retiring when he turned 65. All he wanted was to be on the road and that was it. Himself and Martin Ryan had a strong bond, they had a great friendship.”

Three weeks before John died, Teresa and husband, David, went to visit Dineen at St Anthony’s Nursing Home.

“He said: ‘I’d love my last trip to be on a truck but I know that’s not going to happen,’ ” said Teresa.

“We said: ‘If you want to go in a truck I am sure we can make it happen.’"

The coffin, on the show truck, was followed by two lorries, including the one which Dineen drove himself, and gave the truck driver a final beep as a salute.
