The Bucket List: Ten things to do in Ireland before you pass

The best and most beloved places in the Emerald Isle

Experience the winter solstice at the ancient site Newgrange.

We’ve all seen or heard about the movie where Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play two old codgers who decide on a bucket list of things to do before they die. Here is our best shot at an Irish bucket list of places you might want to see before heading into the wild blue yonder.

1. Slea Head drive, Dingle County Kerry:

Watch the majestic Atlantic sweep in and see the suns’ rays glance off the towering mountains and witness scenes unchanged for centuries. Watch as the little fishing boats make their way to sea and the early morning stillness is broken only by the seagull’s cries. In the distance see the starkly beautiful Blasket Islands.

2. Stroll down Dublin’s Grafton Street on a Saturday morning near Christmas:

All of Dublin comes alive with buskers, street artists, bustling crowds. School kids sing Christmas hymns, festive fare is everywhere and all is well with the world.

3. Visit WB Yeats’s grave:

The greatest poet arguably in all of literature is buried in a quiet grave “under Ben Bulben’s head” in Sligo, See the little church where his family worshipped and feel the presence of the great master.

His epitaph has inspired for decades “Cast a cold eye on life, on death –Horsemen pass by.”

4. Visit Kilmainham Jail in Dublin:

Here you will find the stories of the last moments of many of the men who led the Easter Rising 1916 and the incredible bravery they showed in the face of death. Stand in the actual cells they waited in before their execution. A sacred place.

5. The Ulster American Folk museum in Omagh:

Witness how the great migration of the Scots Irish began from this very area in the 18th century. See the uncanny reproduction of the era from schoolhouse to little town to forge.

6. Spent an afternoon in Dublin’s National Museum:

Home to over 2 million artifacts, dating from the Stone Age. Learn about the incredible culture from earliest Celtic days to the dawn of Christianity and beyond. Marvel at the genius and creativity instilled deep in the Celtic soul.

7. Newgrange at the winter solstice:

Just twenty or so miles from Dublin, where the ancients built their equivalent of the Egyptian pyramids, which they predate, the winter sun passes through the burial chamber at the winter solstice.

8. Hill of Tara, County Meath:

Where the high kings of Ireland were crowned and where the great assemblies of the Irish race took place. A lonely windswept hill where you easily step back in time and imagine what the ancients felt.

9. Doolough Famine walk, County Mayo:

Every year a tragic walk is recreated when hundreds of starving Irish peasants in Mayo had to walk 12 miles in desperate conditions and suffering from starvation to seek relief. Many Women and children died along the way and a Famine cross remembers their sacrifice.

10. Guinness Storehouse, Dublin:

The Burren is a must see .. in spring when the wild flowers are in bloom .. its pure magical
Need an awful big bucket if you ask me BUT Dingle has to be at the top-my wife would disagree a little and say it is Dingle and the Giant's Causeway. To be truthful, it is all of Ireland. A very special place on this earth and its people as so ever friendly.
I've done 8 of the 10. I have certainly had the oppotunity many times over to visit both the Folk Park and the Brewery, but they hold absolutely no interest for me...guess I'll live forever while continually enjoying other, more awe-inspiring sites-LOL!
Mulligans Of Poolbeg street... ;0
Tara - Last chance to see... Drive through the Grave mound of the Fianna.... Rath Lugh... the new M3 motorway shaves the side of it!
8 of 10 complete. Can't wait for next trip! I can also think of a few other places to add Cobh for one, and Giant's Causway and Walls of Derry.
I've only been over the waters once yet managed to hit 6 of those 10, and like others not at the specified time of year. There are so many hallowed and beautiful places, 10 does not do justice. A visit to Cobh and the Hill of Cashel should also be included.
I visited every bucket lisst of things lto ldo in Ireland. The only ONE I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH IS THE ULSTER AMERICAN FOLK PARK. There several historical misconceptions with the MOST BLATANT THE "TYPICAL TWO STORY AMERICAN HOME." Obviously they were not aware of the many frontier homes built west of the Allegheny Mountains. I would add the Cliffs of Mohr, the Giants Causeway, the Aran Islands, Clare Island, the Burren--actually there are too many to list beginning with County Cork and traveling up the west coast all the way around to Dublin. Ireland is well worth more that one visit. AS AN IRISH AMERICAN I BELIEVE I HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
I did the Slea Head drive and spent the afternoon strolling around Dingle. It was my first trip to my ancestorial country and remember as we drove through Inch it was pouring rain and I thought it was going to be a miserable day but as we came along the cliffs the sun came out and the beauty of it all just took my breath away. Have not had the opportunity to get back but when i do i'll be sure to do that bucket list and more.
Thanks for the list -- I've done 6 of the 10; In agreement with Ifaris50, viewing Clew Bay on a clear day from Croagh Patrick was on my bucket list and, in my 73rd year this past June, I made it. Have hiked many Irish mountains, but that was the most rewarding and a hard walk indeed.
I've done all but the Dooleigh walk & the specific times for Newgrange & Grafton. I'll be 80 this year. I better stay away from Mayo.
Check out the new super duper M3 Motorway which got the go ahead from the Irish Govt. to dissect the ancient Tara Skryne Valley destroying 45 archaeological sites in it's wake. This Valley is older than the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, Stonehenge and Machu Pichu. Ireland's Valley of the High Kings is now under a Motorway so that you can enjoy a faster trip to Dublin :) You gotta see it to believe it, one of the wonders of the World! Book your ticket now. Soon they will have another major road near Newgrange too. Good old Ireland sure why wouldnt ya want to see it for yourself...
nice list, but how could you not include the Aran Islands? Have been to Ireland 2 X, but want to go over and over each year! Ellen
Put Belfast City on the list a great place to visit, lots of things to do and see. we spend 3 days there, visit the Giants Causway,Glenn of Antrim,Titanic ship yard,Black taxi tour. Belfast has lots of historic pubs and great places to eat.
Slieve League, Donegal, IRL; CarrickaReade Rope Bridge, Antrim, NI; etc. I've been to all in past years, starting to revisit
