Caio Benicio, the Deliveroo driver who bravely intervened during a knife attack on Parnell Square last November, will contest the upcoming local elections for Fianna Fáil, according to a party statement.

Benicio, who is originally from Brazil, used his helmet to hit a man who had stabbed a woman and three schoolchildren outside Coláiste Mhuire primary school on November 23.

Benicio will stand as a Fianna Fáil candidate in the Dublin North Inner City Local Electoral Area, the party has confirmed.

"Caio wanted to play a greater role in his community and has decided politics is a way of doing that," a Fianna Fáil spokesperson said in a statement.

"We are very pleased he has chosen to run for Fianna Fáil and we believe he will make a fine candidate for the North Inner City."

Tánaiste and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said he is "delighted" that Benicio will represent the party.

"Caio wants to play a greater role in his community and I think he will make a very fine public representative," Martin said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

Benicio told reporters that he wants to "carry on helping people" by running for local office.

"I want to carry on helping people," Benicio said. "Politics is the best way to do that. People were so kind to me and I feel like I have to pay them back."

Benicio will run alongside fellow Fianna Fáil candidates Anne-Marie Connolly and Isabel Oliveira in the constituency.
