Water cannon, riot police and more arrests of dissident  Republicans and extreme Islamists are all expected   as Ireland prepares for its biggest security headache ever in preparation for Queen Elizabeth II and President Obama's visits over the next ten days.

Starting today Irish police are launching a major security operations into action.

It has been announced that up to 10,000 police, along with Defense Forces, will be deployed in Dublin, Kildare, Tipperary and Cork during the State visits. The police have also announced that they are closely monitoring the activity of dissident republicans and supporter of groups such as al-Qaeda.

The Irish Times has reported that thousands of police with riot training and dressed in riot gear will be shadowing the Queen and Obama "in anticipation of violent protests during their visits".

According the Superintendent John Gilligan the Queen's visit, from Tuesday to Friday next week, will be one of the largest operations undertaken by the police force.

The main focus of the Irish police is preventing public disorder. Police in the south and the PSNI are both fearful that dissident republican will plant hoax explosive devices to cause disruption, especially during the Queen's visit.

The police have already borrowed a water-cannon to use on large crowds of rioters during the Queen's four-day visit. They have also hired coaches to transport thousands of police in riot gear from location to location during the visits.

The police believe the major locations of risk are the city centers of Dublin and Cork. These are the locations that have the potential to turn into riot situations.

On Tuesday the Queen will visit the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin and Croke Park on Wednesday. Both events will be very heavily policed due to the potential for hard-line protesters including militant republican groups. A republican group, Eirigi, are already advertising their protest at the Garden of Remembrance.

The streets surrounding the Garden and the Croke Park stadium will essentially be shut-down by the police. Riot squads will be ready at all times, out of sight just streets away.

The Queen will visit Phoenix Park to meet President Mary McAleese at  her residence  Aras an Uachtarain on Tuesday and will also visit Farmleigh , the official government home on Thursday. Similar security operations will be in effect in these areas.

On Wednesday Queen Elizabeth will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Irish War Memorial Garden, at Islandbridge, Dublin and then a State dinner in Dublin Castle. She will then visit the English Market in Cork city on Friday afternoon.

There will also be major traffic restrictions while the two heads of State are visiting. Pedestrians and vehicles will be searched at key locations around the country for security reasons.

Although Dublin will remain open for business traffic restrictions will be in place from Saturday onwards. The public are being urged to use public transport as the main routes around Dublin City Center will be affected. There will also be restrictions throughout Kildare, Tipperary and Cork during the week of the Queen's visit.

Security at Shannon Airport has also been stepped up. US military aircraft use this airport to refuel on the way to and from Afghanistan and Iraq. Police fear that anti-war groups might attack the aircrafts during Obama's visit.

Any public violence or threats would attract the media from around the globe and would be very embarrassing for the Government and police. It is estimated that their massive security crack-down will cost the state $43 million (€30 million).

It's a good picture of a member of the brotherhood of new world guardians, during a time of global warming, when a darker DNA is an additive for survival. If it was a poem I would call it "A Darker Shade of Green" PS. I read your user policy, unfortunately section A pretty much rules out any pertinent conversations.
Let us all sing praise to such a benevolent Monarch,or do I have that right? No I really mean is such a violent Monarch. Lizzy get your troops, both overt and covert, out of Ireland. Have a nice trip home, but beware of all abandoned vehicles that you may pass by on the way.
Jim McGarity wonders if 'the Queen is coming to give our country back to us'. Some time agao, Michael Ring TD suggested that when the queen visits, we should give her back the keys of the country and apologize for the incredible mess we have made of it in her absence. O'Bama has no interest in this visit. He is doing it as a favor to Dan Rooney who will wants to retire, but wants the president to visit while he is the US ambassador to Ireland. Dan Rooney was a major contributor to O'Bama and the two are good friends.
Contrary to what is stated in previous posts, there are virtually no British Subjects left, British Nationals are now Citizens – one of the few categories still retaining Subject status is a citizen of the Republic of Ireland who asked to remain a British subject on the grounds that he has been in Crown Service and/or has associations by way of descent, residence or otherwise with the United Kingdom. So ironically, Ireland possibly has the most living British Subjects, although this status cannot be passed down, so it is a diminishing number – see British Nationality Act 1981.
@pilib04 - if you take your rationale in a wholly historic context, then I, as an Irish Catholic Nationalist should be willing to submit myself to British Rule, as "our side" was beaten at the battle of the Boyne. Well, I didnt fight there, I was not defeated there which means that unlike you, neither my heart or mind is a prisoner of history!! Please cease in your efforts to shackle Ireland in the chains of history - It is not welcome!!
suzandpej... President Obama was "invited" to Ireland and I am sure he will be treated with an abundance of kindness and respect by the Irish people. Like everybody, Obama is interested in his genealogy and your statement that he is "using" the Irish people, is both dense and laughable. And, BTW the Irish are very sharp by nature, so you don’t have to worry about anyone trying to use them; even you.
The real question is, will Ms. Elizabeth Saxe Coburg and Gotha, apologize for the reign of terror that her government unleashed on the island of Ireland? Presumably that is the sole reason for her visit! Will she visit Monaghan/Dublin and apologize for the single, largest act of state terror?
Poor auld Lizzy helping the terrorists spread terror by visiting Ireland - irony at its best or worst, depending on one's perspective.
antoman is right - it in totally wrong for anyone but a British subject to bow to the Queen; not even our own President bowed to the old Brit dear when they met. I see that members of the public will not be allowed anywhere in the vicinity of the Queen, so no handshaking or photo opportunities. But what a snarl-up of traffic the lockdown will create for us in Dublin, and in Cork and Kidare too! Grrrrr!
Not a security issue but word on the streets of Cork is that Dancing Dave is to give a small performance outside the English Market for Her Majesty.Check out Dancing Dave on youtube. He's bigger than Daniel o Donnell.
Only $43 million for the security crackdown? Well done. Here in Toronto, Canada $1.0 Billion was needlessly spent on security for the G20 summit last year. Overkill to say the least. In Ireland, you have the threat of dissident republicans and Al Quaeda extremists. Perhaps the Toronto Police Service could be of assistance. I'm sure they lots of surplus gear they could send over. Just give them a call :)
I have faith in the Irish security forces and the general will of the Irish people. Nothing will happen to the Queen or Obama. There will be a few protests but i think that'll be it.
I just returned from Ireland last thursday, the Garda were looking in manholes and they were posted around areas where The queen or our 'king' might be headed. This was in Galway. Are either going there????
I'm irish and i live in Washington DC but I'm from Tipperary and i have to say I am praying hard that nothing happens the Queen or Obama while in Ireland - it would be deeply shaming for all Irish to have anything happen to them on our soil, i dont care what the arguments are about the Queen coming to Ireland - the Irish have been gracious to all visitors to our country and it should stay that way. If anything goes wrong, it will hurt Ireland in ways far beyond the shame, it will affect our economy, tourism, everything. All IRish should be working to make sure nothing happens guests to our country and should speak out if they know of any MORONS our there thinking of doing anything stupid - THINK OF NATIONAL PRICE - we have been invited in and guests in many countries (not to mention how many live, work and enjoy life in England and the USA) so let's show how accepting we are of our visitors (whether we invited them or not) and show irish pride in how we behave while they are there!! I work a block from the White House, I do not want to have to walk past it in shame every day if anything happens my new President here - stand together and show respect, its what we do!
OBAMA WILL BE IN AND OUT TRYING TO GET THE IRISH VOTE. HE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANY OF THE OF THE DISASTERS HE HAS CREATED OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS. HIS EGO DRIVES HIM, NOT COMPASSION!
