June 2016: Ciara Mageean, Olympic Council of Ireland launches 2016 Irish Olympic Kit.RollingNews.ie

Ciara, who had been battling cancer, was surrounded by her loved ones when she died at 6.30 am on Sunday, 1 November.

The middle-distance runner and European champion wed her husband, Thomas Moran, last month, just one year after she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

They tied the knot in Belfast, planning the wedding after the athlete's diagnosis with stage four bowel cancer.

Ciara and Thomas celebrated their big day by popping bottles of champagne in front of a Mercedes-Benz at the H&W Shipyard, outside Titanic Belfast.

Only one week ago, they held their second celebration at Darver Castle in County Louth, surrounded by their loved ones.

Fellow athlete Sharlene Mawdsley was one of the first to send her condolences, writing, "Rest in peace, Ciara, sending love to your family and friends," while former sports presenter Evanne Ni Chuilinn said, "Such an enormous loss, thinking of Ciara’s husband, family and thousands of friends. Everyone in Irish sport will miss the wee girl from Portaferry so much."

Other sports stars left a message. Presenter and former Irish rugby star Tommy Bowe wrote, "Rest in peace, Ciara. So, so sad," followed by Irish football star Amber Barrett, who said what everyone in Ireland is thinking: "Devastated. A light of elegance and grace. Jesus, Ciara, you’ve broken a nation. God rest your soul. I’m blessed to have had you in my life."

Ciara not only touched the hearts of those in the sporting world, but many celebrities also admired her.

Newstalk's Claire Byrne wrote, "My deepest sympathies to Ciara’s family and friends. She was joy in human form; what a sad loss," with Sile Seoige finding it hard to believe the news, "Truly shocking and deeply unfair. I am so, so sorry, Ciara...you should be here. So much love to you, your husband, family and friends."

Funeral arrangements for the star are yet to be announced.
