Jackie Kennedy, the woman who pioneered how future First Ladies should approach personal style, showed off her flair for fashion on a 1962 trip to India.
Photos from her trip with her sister Princess Lee Radziwill of Poland showcase her perennially elegant and sophisticated sensibilities.
Aged 32, Kennedy travelled to India a year into her husband's administration. According to LIFE Magazine, she carried herself "magnificently" and was received by enthusiastic, "noisy" crowds.
In a LIFE article from the time, correspondent Anne Chamberlin remarked on Kennedy's exemplary outfit choices during the nine day excursion.
She "wore a perpetual grin and a dazzling collection of clothes that were both perfect and simple," the journalist wrote.

Indeed, then considered the most famous woman in the world, Kennedy opted for her signature frock coats in pastel shades, sheath dresses by American designers such as Oleg Cassini and Donald Brooks, delicate pearls, and white gloves.

Of her trip, which involved receptions with international diplomats, meetings with ambassadors, as well as polo matches, boat trips, elephant rides, Kennedy simply stated "It's been a dream".
