An Garda Síochána have announced that the motorcyclist who was involved in the fatal collision with Garda Kevin Flatley in Dublin on Sunday, May 11, has died in hospital.

The man, aged in his 30s, was pronounced deceased at Beaumont Hospital on Saturday evening, May 31, Gardaí said on Sunday.

He was involved in the fatal road traffic collision on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords in North Dublin on Sunday, May 11.

Garda Family Liaison Officers are providing ongoing support and information to both families involved.

Investigations are ongoing.

Garda Kevin Flatley, killed while on duty

On Sunday, May 11, An Garda Síochána confirmed that a motorcycle had struck Garda Kevin Flatley, an on-duty member of An Garda Síochána’s Roads Policing Unit based at Dublin Castle.

49-year-old Flatley was pronounced deceased at the scene on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords in North Dublin.

The motorcyclist was transported by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries.

In a statement, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said he was "deeply saddened" by the death of his colleague, who he said had "over 26 years of dedicated service to An Garda Síochána and the people of Ireland."

Harris said: "Garda Kevin Flatley is the 90th member of An Garda Síochána killed in the performance of duty.

"Kevin was on duty this afternoon, serving the public by endeavouring in keeping them safe on our roads.

"His death is a terrible reminder of the dangers faced by Gardaí.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”

Ireland's leading politicians paid tribute, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin noting: "Our Gardaí serve with courage and dedication each and every day to keep the public safe and to prevent crime."

Tánaiste Simon Harris said: "Garda Flatley was a long-serving and much-respected member of An Garda Síochána, devoted to his job and to keeping his community safe. There is no greater example of that than today when he was working to keep the public safe on our roads.

"The untimely loss of Garda Flatley reminds us of the frailty of life and how suddenly loss and grief can be thrust upon us. It is also a tragic reminder of the risks that Gardaí take everyday in the service of our country and its people."

"An absolute gentleman"

A notice on RIP.ie said Garda Flatley was survived by a wife, Úna, two daughters, Erin and Aoife, as well as his parents, brother, in-laws, extended family, friends, and neighbors. He was predeceased by his sister.

In the notice, Flatley was described as a "dedicated member of An Garda Síochána" and an "avid member and coach of O'Dwyer's GAA local club."

A funeral was held on Friday, May 16, at St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Balbriggan, Co Dublin.
