Ireland provisionally set a record for its warmest day ever in April on Wednesday, April 30.

A new provisional record-high April temperature of 25.9°C (78.6°F) for Ireland was observed at the Athenry station in Co Galway on Wednesday afternoon, Met Éireann said on Wednesday evening.

The temperature will be quality-controlled and verified to confirm the new record in the coming days, Met Éireann added.

The previous April record was 25.8°C, which was recorded at Glenties in Co Donegal in 1984.

Met Éireann said that provisionally, Wednesday was only the second time in Irish climate records that shaded air temperatures have gone above 25°C degrees during the month of April.

In climatological terms, Met Éireann defines a 'Summer Day' as any day where the maximum shaded air temperature at a Met Éireann station is greater than 25.0°C.

Wednesday was Ireland's second earliest climatological Summer Day since records began, the Irish Meteorological Service said.

Last year, Ireland's first summer day was on May 10 in Listowel, Co Kerry.
