The man, who is living in South America, was detained by police in Brazil earlier this week.

Officially, he was arrested over ‘immigration matters’, gardaí said in a statement.

However, Extra.ie understands that the man will be met by gardaí at Dublin Airport where he will be requested to help detectives with their investigation.

In a statement, gardaí said: "An Garda Síochána are aware of the arrest of an Irish citizen in Brazil on immigration-related matters only. This is a matter for the Brazilian authorities at this time."

The news comes after a woman in her 20s was arrested over Daniel’s death earlier this week. She was later released without charge and a file has been sent to the DPP, who will now determine if charges should be brought against the woman.

While the initial postmortem results on Daniel’s body were inconclusive, gardaí were satisfied that they had enough information to arrest the woman. She had previously been helping gardaí with their investigations.

Officers believe Daniel was just three years old when he was killed. Gardaí upgraded the case to a homicide earlier this month.

Daniel’s remains were discovered on marshy ground in Donabate, north Dublin, in September of this year after gardaí launched a search for his body.

The little boy was only discovered missing after a back-to-school allowance was claimed for him, resulting in his mother falsely alleging that he was attending a local school. Checks revealed there was no listing for the boy at the named school.

The Department of Social Protection contacted Tusla, and the agency alerted gardaí on August 29.
