There are some places in the world that can be described as having an eerie and mysterious energy.

With Halloween approaching, new research by global car rental comparison site DiscoverCars.com showcases some of the most haunted roads in Europe to find out about some of the spookiest roads you can drive through.

Ireland is famous for its rich tradition of sometimes sinister folklore and legends, and two Irish roads with associated ghost stories featured in the round up.

Looking at some of the most notoriously haunted roads across Europe, researchers found some harrowing experiences shared on various online forums and social media from people claiming they or someone they know have witnessed paranormal activity while driving.

The study found that one of the most widely reported haunted roads is Old Tramore Road and around the N25 in Ireland. This is a highly discussed area online for paranormal activity.

"This road, as well as the surrounding area around the N25, is a common topic on online ghost-story forums in Ireland. We found that this particular area may be haunted by the ghost of an old man who you can see stepping into the road, only to disappear moments later," said the researchers.

"We found that there have been many sightings of this old man, who is described as having a “bent” posture, and many even want others not to venture out onto this stretch of road at night, presumably so you don’t encounter this spirit!"

Another supposedly haunted location in Ireland included in the list are the narrow approaches up Montpelier Hill, which are said to have a reputation of paranormal activity. Many report feeling a general sense of unease and paranoia along these roads, with many people saying that they felt as though something or someone was lurking out of sight.

One person online said that while they were driving up, “the whole way up felt wrong, and in the car park you could swear someone was standing just beyond the trees.”

“As Halloween approaches, now is the perfect time to learn more about Europe’s most haunted roads!" said Aleksandrs Buraks, Head of Growth at DiscoverCars.com.

“If you find yourself driving down one of these spooky roads, make sure to drive slowly and carefully. Knowing that you’re in an allegedly haunted place might be distracting, so it's important to pay attention to your surroundings and drive safely. Even more so if you are driving at night, when there’s reduced visibility.”
