Hoping for another Irish James Bond à la Pierce Brosnan? It doesn't look likely, as Idris Elba continues to trump the fan polls.

As Daniel Craig prepares to hang up his 007 title, the rumor mill is in overdrive as to who will play the suave spy in the next installment.

Acclaimed British actor Idris Elba seems to have won over Bond fans. In a recent pole carried out by ODEON cinemas, the 45-year-old thespian garnered 26% of votes. In second place, was popular character actor Tom Hardy (who is usually seen in villainous roles) with 22%.

As for Irish contenders, "The Hobbit" and "Poldark" star Aidan Turner rounded out the top five. The 35-year-old Dubliner secured just 5% of the overall vote.

Cork native Cillian Murphy's name has also been circulating. The "Peaky Blinders" star is odds of 15/2 to become the iconic character, according to bookmakers at Paddy Power.

As for fellow Irish actors, Michael Fassbender has more distant odds with 16/1, while Jamie Dornan has little chance, at 66/1.

While Elba (45) remains a fan favorite, it seems unlikely that the "Luther" actor will secure the role for the yet untitled "Bond 26" picture.

Movie critic John Rain wrote in London's Daily Express,

"There is no doubt that Idris Elba would make an excellent James Bond, he has the presence, charisma, charm and rock-hard-action qualities required for the role. However he’s 45 years old. If he were to be the next choice for Bond 26, that film would probably emerge when Elba is 50."

However, bare in mind Roger Moore did sign on for the role at the grand age of 48 - alas, he did only last four flicks before being replaced.
