James O'Reilly has graduated from a Bachelor's Degree in Arts, at Dublin City University.DCU

James O’Reilly has proven that it is never too late to return to education.. The Dubliner has become one of the oldest students to receive a degree from Dublin City University.

As he prepared to enter DCU’s Autumn graduation ceremony in the Helix, James admitted he was feeling nervous.

In a post shared by the college on Instagram, he said: "You know, I’m old enough to have more sense!"

James went on to share what motivated him to return to education and achieve his lifelong goal.

He continued: "My wife passed away seven years ago and I went into depression.

"The lads [his sons] persuaded me to do something that would interest me to occupy my time.

"So I started the BA in English and History, and I got a 2.1 on it."

Earlier in life, James earned a Master’s in Information Studies.

However, this degree "means a lot" to James as he has always has an interest in literature and history.

As for what’s next, James admitted that he is just going to take his time and see.

He explained: "Well, some of my tutors want me to go for a PhD, but I’m taking a year out to decide.

"Certainly not going to have a career!"

James has received plenty of congratulatory messages online since his graduation.

One Instagram user wrote: "This is beautiful", while another added: "This is so great!"

A third commented: "Fabulous- congratulations James", with yet another sharing: "Wonderful! Congratulations!"

Over 4,600 DCU graduates walked across the stage of the Helix in the university’s October Graduation Ceremonies, but James’ story might just be the most touching of all.
