NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park, Dublin, on Sept 28th.GAA.ie
The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have strong Irish links through their owners, the Rooney family, will take on the Minnesota Vikings at the home of GAA in front of an expected 76,000 people.
It’ll be a historic occasion for the NFL as they continue their global expansion, as Ireland joins the UK, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil as host countries for the NFL regular season.
One of the major issues when the NFL announced they were playing at Croke Park was what to do with Hill 16. No terrace standing is allowed in NFL stadiums, so it wasn’t fully clear what they’d do with the nearly 13,000-capacity terrace.
They eventually settled on putting in seats, and now, less than 2 weeks out from the big game, a TikToker has shown the first glimpse of how the historic stand is going to look.
It’s not the first time that seats have been put in place on the Hill. When the Irish football and rugby teams played at Croke Park during Lansdowne Road’s renovation, seats were put in back in 2007.

This match is also not the first time the Pittsburgh Steelers have played at GAA HQ. Back in 1997, they played the Chicago Bears in a preseason matchup dubbed ‘The American Bowl’. In front of around 25-30,000 spectators at Croke Park, the Steelers won 30-17.

It’s set to be another glamorous occasion, full of all the American razzmatazz and showmanship you come to expect. It will hopefully be the beginning of a prosperous relationship between Ireland and the NFL, as they look to become regular hosts in the future.
You can be sure to catch the festivities in the lead up to the match, which takes place on Sunday, September 28, with kick off at 2:30 pm.
